Five of my favourite inspirational quotes
There are thousands of inspirational quotes out there, most of which resonate with us at different points in our lives and many have a constant meaning on a deeper level. I love reading them, and today I was reminded of one of my favourites (number 2 on the list). Anyway, here are five of my favourites. Perhaps you might share of yours? 1: “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” – Albert Einstein 2: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” – Henry Ford 3: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs 4: “Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” – Carl Bard 5: “What others think of me is none of my business” – Wayne Dyer (I think) Thanks for reading Paul - CAP Business Clubs

Happy New Year!
How many of you have made a New Year’s Resolution? How many have already broken it? Some of us may try to lose weight, join a gym, do more charitable work or give up smoking. Now is a good time to look at your personal affairs and consider making some important resolutions that could make a big impact on your life in the coming year. 1. Make a Will – A Will is one of those things we keep meaning to make but never quite get round to. Making a Will is not difficult or expensive and it is the only way that you can ensure that your loved ones are provided for after your death in the way that you want them to be. If you have already made a Will, review it. Make sure it still reflects your wishes and your current family circumstances. 2. Consider a Lasting Power of Attorney – there are currently 800,000 people with dementia in the UK and the number is steadily increasing. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney now, you can choose who you would like to make important decisions about your care, medical treatment and money, if in the future you are unable to make your own decisions, giving peace of mind both to you and your family. 3. Review your business relationships – if you are in Partnership do you have a Partnership Agreement setting out your responsibilities, shares in the profit and losses of the business and what happens if you want to end the business? Review your Terms and Conditions. Do they define what you have agreed to supply and more importantly what you haven’t agreed to supply? Is the price clear? Is the extent of your responsibility clearly defined? Taking these simple steps now could help you avoid a lengthy and costly dispute in the future. 4. Review your personal relationships – sadly January is the busiest month of the year for divorce lawyers. If you have come to the realisation that there are cracks in your relationship which simply cannot be repaired, then get some professional advice as to the options open to you. If you are considering moving in with a partner, sit down and discuss with your partner the basis on which you will be living together, who owns the property and what should happen if you are to split up. Get your agreement recorded in writing. If you are taking the plunge of marriage, consider whether a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a sensible step. Wishing you all a happy, peaceful and prosperous 2014. Top Tips for a hassle free Christmas and New Year
I have been busy preparing for the festive season (Christmas to you and I) and as I do so, the risk manager within me always comes to the fore! I cannot help but see this time as one of increased risk and exposure with fewer precautions being taken to protect what we’ve purchased or built up over our lifetimes. I thought I’d share a few simple top tips to ensure that you and your treasured possessions are safe and with us all to enjoy another Christmas. Top Tops 1. If you have home insurance – check the cover to ensure that there is an uplift in the contents limit over periods such as Christmas. As your home is often full to the brim with the latest “must haves”, it’s worth checking that your insurance is adequate. 2. Have you checked your smoke alarms or detectors recently? If not, do it today – not tomorrow as that could be too late. If the batteries have been in longer than 6 months, replace them – a fiver or tenner spent now could make the difference between peace and chaos. 3. If you are travelling to spend Christmas with relatives – does your home insurance cover you for any loss or damage to any personal possessions away from home? Check - if you accidentally drop that i-Pad that your wealthy Aunt has just bought you, are you covered? 4. Are you planning to be away for all or part of Christmas or New Year? If so, ensure that you tell a close neighbour who can regularly check on your house, and make sure you have your lights set on timer, and leave a car on your drive – anything to make sure your house doesn’t look empty! 5 Don’t leave festive lights on all day and all night. The most common cause of house fires is due to electrical faults and issues. This could be a faulty plug or wiring or simply that the transformer has burnt out. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Healthy New Year! The Reason for Father Christmas’ Success Father Christmas’ working year maybe very short but he has a huge amount of work to do in a very short space of time and a deadline that just can’t be missed. So how does he do it? Father Christmas knows what he’s good at and what he needs to focus on. Everything else has been delegated to a largely unseen but dedicated team of skilled and organised elves that work throughout the year toward their Christmas goal. We’ve all seen Father Christmas in Grottos asking children what they would like for Christmas but do we always pay attention to the elf by his side making a note of all the relevant details - name, address, gift etc. It is the same elves that are responsible for adding details from the letters sent to Father Christmas to the database making sure that no one is forgotten. Senior elves check that all the presents are age appropriate and parentally approved. They also supervise that the elves making and obtaining the presents do so within the allocated time frame. Presents are beautifully wrapped and clearly labelled with each child’s name and address (and often chimney accessibility). Postal elves sort the presents geographically into the relevant sacks and load them onto the sleigh which passed its MOT and is flight worthy thanks to the mechanical elves. For the months leading up to Christmas the stable elves have fed Rudolph, Dancer, Prancer, Dasher, Blitzen, Vixen, Cupid, Comet and, Donner a special diet making them lean, keen and fast and Rudolph’s completed a refresher orienteering course so that they don’t get lost. They shouldn’t as the Sat Nav elves have programmed the sleigh with the quickest, most straightforward route taking into consideration adverse weather conditions and atmospheric delays (as advised by the weather and travel elves). The wardrobe elves have polished Father Christmas’s boots and his outfit has been repaired, cleaned and ironed so that he looks his best; just in case someone catches a glimpse of him (and to make sure that there are no bits to snag on a chimney). The list of jobs carried out by the elves is endless (only a few of them are listed here) but it’s because of the elves proactive and effective work that nothing is left to chance. When Father Christmas steps into the sleigh on Christmas Eve he is confident in the knowledge that all he has to do is make sure that every child receives their presents before the sun comes up on Christmas Day. And that is why he hasn’t missed a deadline! Buying local - how important is it?
With THAT time of year very fast approaching, thoughts come to mind about were best to spend our hard earned cash. Even though it's tempting to look online, and buy on ebay, amazon and the like, this will not help our local shops to survive. It's of course not easy to find the latest electro-digital gadget in the nearby high street, or the designer handbag at the independent fashion boutique next door. The handbag might be there, but not at the online price. The immediate effect of buying locally is that there are less travel costs involved and also no postage to pay. Internet shopping is quite handy, but there are usually a good few pounds added for postage and packing. It's also quite often a bit of a gamble buying something you can't actually see in 'the flesh' or touch. The long term effects are something we do not notice straight away, but are made obvious when we think about what has already happened in a lot of places. We have a catch 22 situation - the less money people spend in their local shops, the less choice there will be, the more likely it is that customers stay away. And the more likely that good local shops will close, allowing charity shops and coffee outlets to take over the town. So the downward spiral continues. It's a sight that we see duplicated more and more often in more and more towns. Encouraging people to spend their money locally is not easy in these times when disposable income has generally gone down across the country. And people will make choices that affect them directly. Maybe it's time to see the bigger picture, at least to think about it now and then, how our buying habits affect the world around us. |
