It’s around 5 years since I started my own law firm, although I have been a solicitor for more than 25 years. 2. WHAT MADE YOU START YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS? After 20 years or so working for big commercial law firms in London and Bristol, I realised I wanted to work for myself and also work much more in my local community. I have been really pleased to be able to use my experience to provide a legal service to families, individuals and businesses, which is both personal and commercially-focussed. 3. WHAT WAS GREAT ABOUT LAST YEAR FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Last year my firm took on two more lawyers, including a property lawyer with 20 years of conveyancing experience. This means that we now have four service areas: private client (wills, probate, trusts), property (conveyancing and leases), litigation (disputes and court proceedings) and commercial (contracts, business documents and company sales). 4. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE COMING YEAR? I would like to consolidate our litigation service by taking on another litigation lawyer. 5. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE FOR A BUSINESS TO HAVE? A strong and identifiable culture that permeates all that it does. 6. WHAT KIND OF CONTACTS WOULD HELP YOUR BUSINESS? We provide a broad range of legal services (but not divorce or crime), and so we can help:
7. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR NO. 1 WISH IF YOU HAD A GENIE? An extra day of the week, between Saturday and Sunday. 8. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Outdoor activities (hiking, skiing, sailing), music and theatre. 9. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE? Lawrence of Arabia, or the Indiana Jones films. 10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL? I am spoiled at home because my wife is an excellent cook, but my favourite meal was one we had on the Bay of Naples – for the setting and view. 11. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE UK HOLIDAY DESTINATION? West coast of Scotland. 12. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION ABROAD? French Alps. 13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAMME? Frasier – which shows my age. 14. YOUR FAVOURITE SONG? Most songs by the band Squeeze – which also shows my age! 15. WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? Being able to use my experience and skills to help people. 16. IF YOU HAD A MAGIC WAND WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? We would have that office in Paris that I sometimes dream about. 17. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS TIME? Running the Paris office. 18. DO YOU HAVE ANY USEFUL TIPS OR IDEAS THAT YOU COULD SHARE WITH THE OTHER CAP MEMBERS? If you do what you do well, and continue to do that, over time you will rise towards the top of your market, sector or area. |
