1 - HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS? 5 years
2 - WHAT WAS GREAT ABOUT LAST YEAR FOR YOUR BUSINESS? The flexibility! Last year was a big personal year for us (renovating a house, moving, getting a puppy & getting married) so it wasn’t a year to be pushing to grow the business particularly, but it did show me therefore that practicing what I preach (focusing your energy on the key tasks, having good systems in place & streamlining your processes) enabled the business to continue to grow and run smoothly, even when time was restricted.
3 - WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE COMING YEAR? I’m keen to continue to grow my client base in and around Chepstow and The Forest of Dean this year as we get more established here. I’ve also been offered a couple of opportunities to take a more active role in some of the companies that I coach which I’m keen to explore and develop.
4 - WHAT IS THE BEST THING YOU HAVE DONE IN YOUR BUSINESS THAT YOU CONTINUE TO DO? I guess for me that’s creating the right work-life balance. I made the move into coaching after burning out running my previous businesses, I had to learn how to get more done in less time and how to protect and maintain my energy levels if I was going to run a successful business. I still prioritise those tools & strategies that allow me to get the best results I can in the minimum time, and a lot of that comes down to setting boundaries & stepping away from the business regularly, so that’s fundamental to how I run my company and to what I coach my clients around.
5 - WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE FOR A BUSINESS TO HAVE? Clarity. I think for a business to be truly successful (especially if it wants to operate efficiently) everyone within that business needs to have total clarity around what the business stands for – it’s story, it’s why, it’s values, it’s ideal customers, it’s USPs. I think once you have real clarity around those things, everything else becomes so much simpler & easier.
6 - WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? I negotiated a property deal shortly after moving to Bristol which allowed me to live in a lovely townhouse, right on the river, in Hotwells, effectively rent-free for 7 years. That was a pretty good deal which I’m quite proud of.
7 - WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN THAT WOULD HELP YOUR BUSINESS? I’d actually quite like to get my accountancy qualifications. I’m pretty good with numbers and it’s a career I considered when I was at school/college and I’d like to be able to move into roles as a non-Exec Director, but perhaps with an FD bias, or to perhaps move into company turnaround in the future, and I think having that qualification behind me would be quite valuable.
8 - WHAT MISTAKES HAVE YOU MADE, OTHERS COULD LEARN FROM? There’s a question! A lot of what I do now in coaching is based around the mistakes I made running earlier businesses, but I guess the main one would be failing to set firm enough boundaries around work and not creating (and then standing up for) the work-life balance that I wanted. I see this so often amongst my clients, because there’s always more you could be doing as a business owner, but equally no-one else is ever going to tell you to switch off or go home or take a holiday. I realised you have to stick up for those things for yourself as the business owner, and make yourself unavailable occasionally – it’s a good thing both for you and your business.
9 - WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS CONTACT WOULD HELP YOUR BUSINESS? Accountants are great contacts for me as they often know their clients fairly well and can often see when a business is/has stalled and suggest a free introductory session. Equally marketers, who have clients actively looking to grow are also good.
10 - CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANY MOTIVATIONAL BOOKS THAT HAVE HELPED YOU? The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson is great, as is The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, and I love the E-Myth by Michael Gerber.
11 - WHAT WOULD BE YOUR NO1 WISH IF YOU HAD A GENIE? I think having the ability to live every day twice, if you want to. There’s a film called About Time in which the main character can time-travel and the advice given to him is to go back each day and live it a 2nd time. The first time you’re living normally – rushing through the day, a bit stressed, a bit tired, but the 2nd time you slow down a little bit, pay attention to the little details and make the most of that day and I guess I just thought that was a lovely concept.
12 - WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST CAP BUSINESS CLUBS EXPERIENCE TO DATE? Having only just joined I guess just everyone making me feel so welcome, I’ve already had some lovely 1:1s with several of the members and feel like I’m starting to get to know people.
"Since I've started working with Kayleigh, I've more than doubled my business! My confidence has grown hugely, and I've gone from feeling overwhelmed, stressed and frustrated to enjoying running my business and seeing progress towards my goals. I can't recommend her highly enough!" - Greg Dodimead, Blackgate Design
"Kayleigh has changed my approach to business. Her genuine desire to help has enabled me to focus on developing my business whilst deploying useful strategies to field any curve balls, resulting in 50% growth since our coaching sessions began. Her common-sense approach is both refreshing and familiar. I just feel like she’s on my side, with no agenda other than to see my business grow". - Michelle Aldridge, Business Support Services
"Before working with Kayleigh I was running around with no clear direction, whilst I had a great business plan in place I struggled to find the time to implement it. Kayleigh introduced me to some simple but very effective strategies to get me focused on the key elements of my business then showed me how to set short, medium and long term goals in both my business and personal life. As a result of working with Kayleigh I now have time for all the things that are important to me, my business is growing very well, I've even found time to start another business online, my health is in much better shape I've even found the time to train for and recently complete my first triathlon and I have much more time for my family, I haven't worked at the weekend for more than a year now.
I look forward to our weekly calls and monthly meetings knowing that the constant planning and goal setting will keep me on track to my ultimate goal. If you're looking for someone to stop you procrastinating, help you set and achieve your goals, support and inspire you and help you achieve the lifestyle you want, I strongly recommend you get in touch with Kayleigh". - Paul Bird, CEO, Climate Roofs Ltd
"It's brilliant to have a fresh pair of eyes on your business. Being a business owner, I get so involved that sometimes I can't see the wood for the trees. Kayleigh is fantastic at giving that outside perspective. She helps me step back and re-establish what I'm aiming for and guide my activities to help me reach my goals. She keeps me on track with my targets weekly, monthly and annually so we really do see progress. Kayleigh often comes up with ideas I hadn’t thought of - new ways to market, how to deal with clients, new business ventures, etc. I highly recommend her." - Hannah Falcon-Lang, Button Media
