Time to Freshen Up!
I have recently had a bit of a revamp in the image department, and I am not talking photographs. I have changed my hairstyle and colour quite dramatically, which is so unlike me but hey ho! This change got me thinking, maybe my website looks as tired as my old hairstyle, maybe I need to update old images, give my site that clean fresh look, like the one that I am faced with in the mirror in the morning! Take a look at your own website, are the images recent, have they been there so long that you have stopped noticing them? If you have, have your clients? Maybe it is time to give your website the once over, make it look fresh, you will be surprised how different it will look by just changing a few images. It won’t take long and if your website looks as fresh and new as I feel with my new coiffure, then what are you waiting for!

Don’t Look at Me and Smile I recently watched a documentary ‘Alive in the Face of Death’ by the British photographer Rankin and while I was watching one of his subjects said that he had his photograph taken but that it wasn’t really him. I thought about the ways in which different photographers manage subjects, Rankin, a great photographer, directs his subject what to do and the expression he is after but for me that surely is the photographers interpretation and not the subjects true personality. My style is to take candid photographs; one that I think captures someone’s personality, whether they are concentrating, having a conversation or enjoying friends company, the candid shot for me is the true representation of them. On the other end of the scale you have photographers like Mike Aldridge whose photography is very much directed and staged, yet because he works in the fashion industry it seems to fit, probably because it is what the model is wearing and not the model we are interested in. The latest trend that captures a person’s true and real personality is the ‘Selfie’. It has become a global craze, the Smartphone self-portrait. Teens in the street to the movie stars at a première, it’s the thing to do, show people who you are. I do a lot of Business Biographies, which are a series of images that show the people who work there in the environment that they work in, their interactions. The images are a natural reflection of the business, which clients feel comfortable with and are reassuring, they know who is answering the phone and what they look like, they know who is taking their order or organising a service. Reassuring in our faceless digital world. So the big guys have their style and I have mine, one I am very comfortable with. I Would have loved to have been a wildlife photographer, but life got in the way! Now I just don’t have much spare time to sit quietly somewhere remote and wait for a bird or animal to come along. So I cheat! And so can you. Close by we have some very good places to do just that. Just over the river is Slimbridge Wild Fowl Trust. Here there are excelent photo opportunities, not only for bird photos, but they also have some interesting mammals, like this otter. A little further afield is the Cotswold Wildlife Park. They have some great animals, including penguins and the ever popular meerkats.
You don’t need a fancy camera or a telephoto lens to capture our more “tame” wildlife, as with this little cygnet or this cheeky robin. So why not get out there and give “wildlife” photography a go! Happy snapping! Let your potential customers know who you are. There is nothing that puts me off more when I visit a website than seeing stock photographs, not just because I am a photographer but also because I really want to see who I am doing business with. Images of you, your employees and the environment that you work in show clients that you are proud of your business and your staff, that you are professional. It gives potential customers peace of mind. Many people use the internet now as the main route to finding products and services, and a recent study has show that 67% of visitors to a website which has good images stay on the page and more often that not they will either buy a product or enquire about a service.
