Inbound 4G Roaming – EE
In a statement EE’s Chief Executive, Olaf Swantee, said that when tourists travel abroad they are “increasingly looking for fast and reliable mobile experiences. Technology is not just shaping how people book and research holidays but what they look for when they are choosing a country to visit”. So as from 17 December 2013 US visitors to the UK will be able to utilise EE’s (Everything Everywhere) superfast 4G network. The company is the first company in the UK to offer this facility. This is due to an agreement with the US network company AT&T. The intention is to extend this to visitors from other countries during this year by launching further partnerships during the year. EE was the first company to launch 4G in the UK and so far has managed to make this available to 60% of the population with 160 cities and towns being covered by Christmas last year. A report of 9 December 2013 published by 4GEE Mobile Living Index showed that there was more than 1.2 million subscribers. Beta Telecoms 01291 620189 http://www.betatelecoms.co.uk

BT’s Network Level Filtering Service
BT has revealed that it is upgrading its network level filtering service to enable parents to keep children safe online. In a statement by BT’s Managing Director of Consumer, Commercial, Marketing and Digital, Pete Oliver said “BT takes the issue of online child protection extremely seriously and we are very pleased to be able to launch a whole home filter to help parents keep their families safe online”. Free parental controls have been available from the company for several years but these have been limited to desktops and laptops. The ungraded service expands the type of devices that the service will be available to desktops, laptops, smartphones, games consoles and tablets. BT have trailed the service with numerous customers with and other interested parties such as Mumsnet which took part in the development. The service is to be named BT Parental Controls and will be free to all BT account holders. The company will be contacting its customers during this year to offer the service to them. British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has commented that British businesses are being held back by unreliable and slow broadband. Despite BT’s Super Switch Day in December where 5000 properties went live with superfast broadband as part of the Government’s planned commitment to provide superfast broadband by the end of 2017 to 95% of the country the BCC states that there are still problems. BCC’s Director General, John Longworth, stated that broadband “is essential” and ranks with a stable electrical grid and good transport links. Businesses need superfast broadband to make them competitive and able to operate in the global market. Basically businesses deserve good superfast broadband. There are businesses that are struggling to operate even on a basic level because of poor broadband and this is totally unacceptable to the BCC. Public Wi-Fi – Do You Exercise Caution?
B2B internet and Kaspersky Lab carried out a recent survey to see if people took precautions when using public wi-fi hot-spots. The results revealed that a staggering 34%, of those who took part in the survey, never took precautions despite the fact that it is easy for traffic along these networks can be intercepted and used for evil purposes. 14% even stated that they used these hotspots to shop and bank online event though they were exposing their bank details and credit/debit cards to such risks. Kaspersky warned that even if the connections were on https connection, encrypted or password protected there were still risks involved in using these networks and without encryption cyber-criminals have an easy time accessing and stealing data. Only 13% of the people surveyed admitted to checking the level of encryption of the hot-spot. Next time you use such a hot-spot check the security before you use it. High Speed Broadband Trains – More Questions Than Answers
It was recently announced that high speed mobile broadband was being introduced by some train companies and the International Data Corporation (IDC) is now raising queries about the introduction of this. It has stated that this will fail to solve all of the problems and that there are more questions than answers. IDC’s, John Delaney has welcomed the proposed improvements but he considers that Network Rail’s suggestions do not solve the current problem. He stated that there is also a requirement for high-speed radio access network and he questions the terms on wich this would be provided and by whom. He is quoted as saying “Will passengers be able to use better broadband on trains as part of their regular mobile data subscription or will they have to pay an extra fee for it? If they have to pay extra how will competition between on-train broadband service providers be ensured?”. He ended with a warning that these issues need to be resolved before the proposed improvement can be made. |
